The Old and The New will Come Together

The old and the new will come together at Kuhmo Chamber Music this summer. The programme is largely that planned by long-term Artistic Director Vladimir Mendelssohn, who died last year, but Minna Pensola and Antti Tikkanen, who have replaced him, have now brought something of their own to the event. Now is the time to come along to Finland’s biggest chamber music festival to see how things turn out.

The Kuhmo Chamber Music theme this year is ’The Art of Illusion’. Vladimir Mendelssohn originally planned this programme for the summer of 2020, but the Festival had to be put on hold because of the pandemic. Last summer a slightly reduced event was organised on a Beethoven theme, and now the Art of the Illusion can finally go ahead. The Festival runs 10–23 July.

This summer’s guest composer is Argentinian-born Osvaldo Golijov, who will be presenting his works on 17 July and will remain on site until the end. Composer Outi Tarkiainen will also be there, and the first performance of her piece Woodland Fanfares can be heard on 18 July. There will be over a hundred performers at Kuhmo this year, including pianist Natacha Kudritskaya, violinists Daniel Rowland and Elina Vähälä, cellist David Cohen and soprano Tuuli Lindeberg. Regulars at Kuhmo in the past few years, the Danel Quartet and Storioni Trio, are back again. One newcomer is the Quartetto di Cremona.
