At a time of a worldwide tendency holding onto the ideals of the nation state and its dominant ethnicities, the Turkish ensemble Hezarfen draws attention to the in-between space in which displaced people find themselves. In the program Recollections of Displacement they portray these experiences of flight and exile, both in Turkey and in a wider European perspective.
Hezarfen’s Kontinent Dalsland programme features four works originally commissioned for Hezarfen over the last 10 years, including works by Berkant Gençkal, Yannis Kyriakides, Nadim Husni, and Bassem Alkhouri. Added to this is a newly arranged Epitaph by Ukrainian composer Alexey Voytenko. These combine with three new works commissioned by the Kontinent Dalsland festival by Katarina Barrukk, Mansoor Hosseini and Anne Pajunen.
This programme opens a window to the human side of displacement. In a ritualistic format of voiceover (text)- music; cycling eight times in all, each time in a new place. Powerfully evocative words of Mykola Zerov, Mahmoud Darwish, Yaşar Kemal, Neşe Yaşin and other refugee authors in their original languages intersperse between new instrumental works by the represented composers.
At the festival, members of Hezarfen Ensemble will also be integrated into further musical adventures, collaborations and constellations with Kontinent Dalsland collaborators called ‘ox-eyes’, in which individuals and duos pop up in unexpected venues around the lake in Mellerud Sept. 11-14, 2024.
