Amazing virtuosity and style
Nicolas Altstaedt’s recording of the seldom played C.P.E. Bach cello concertos will be one of the highest ranked concerto recordings of this year for sure. Three concertos contain beautiful baroque music for the cello, unfairly rarely played. These concertos lack nothing to become standard 18th century repertoire. The combination of the concertos provide for a magnificent display of musicality. The first, Wq170, is a display in temperament and drama, with a passionate display of tone. The second, Wq171, is a lesson in virtuosity and particularly bow technique. Meticulous phrasing and delicate touches on the strings give fair character to the piece. The last, Wq172, is a display of 18the century style. The difference on spirits of the outer and the middle slow movements are gracefully provided, with the largo’s resentful, resigned atmosphere created by the artist magnificently. Here is a thinking musician that is likely to register these concertos under his name. One of the most important additions to our discography and a CD I will return from time to time.
